Though I understand why Sam thought the trials were purifying him, it's more that it was killing him, but Sam doesn't know that yet.

It's sad too, that he doesn't think he's good enough, because he's not "clean", and he felt that way, even as a little boy. He's so desperate to feel purified. Poor Sam. He needs a hug! And of course, we're always ready to volunteer.
