My heart broke for Sam all the way through S3, not because it wasn't about Dean but because he tried SO HARD to save his brother and it hurt him so badly not to be able to!

Yes, he tried SO HARD, and it broke his heart that he couldn't save Dean! It breaks my heart, too.

This arc was heart wrenching! Sam tried his everything and then things went from bad to worse when he lost Dean. :(

Very heart wrenching! Yes, he tried everything (and he was supposed to save Dean, but when the writer's strike happened, they changed his storyline... *sigh*)... and he was so heartbroken after losing his brother... things did go from bad to worse. :(
