Last time we saw Sam field stripping his weapon was in ep 7.02, when he was dealing with his issues with Hallucifer. Here, Sam couldn't sleep, and once again he's doing this to help him to deal. He tells Dean that's fine, but he isn't. Later on, he'll open up to Dean, and we get an awesome brother moment♥

I think the gun fiddling was a fantastic callback to 7x02!! And Sam's shoulders look really good in that shirt! :D
