Or that Sam finally gave Dean the 'apple pie' he craved but never got. I think the fact that the series continued beyond s5 distracted people from the final message Swan Song was supposed to have.
Yes, Sam did give Dean a chance to live a normal life. Though I think Dean knew that it wouldn't work out, because, as Dean said in 6.01 "You can't outrun your past".
