The stereotype going around is that Utopia is eschwa's "evil little twin", where it's All Snark All The Time and everyone is mean and evil and hateful. Which is, as you know, complete crap, since people are coming to Utopia to get AWAY from the bullshit that goes on on eschwa.

The Childfree> thing was really only the second piece of drama we've EVER HAD.

And even then, it's not such a big deal now. We had our spat, and we're over it. Even then that bit of drama didn't hold a candle to some of the major shitstorms that eschwa had.

BBSDrama is there, but I don't know if it's what Khelair's referring to. Not like any BBS or webfora is off-topic there.

For instance...had I posted about my neighbor on eschwa, I would've gotten a ton of passive-aggressive snark. At least on utopia, if we're pissed at each other, we get it out in the open and move on.

I think that there is probably a rather large amount of people on eschwa that are still propagating the idea that utopia is bitchier than eschwa. It's probably from those weeks of angst-filled posts before a decent flow of thought was working through the BBS. Since it's established some patterns and regularity in the system with the users, that certainly hasn't been the case. But that is the stage at which you were trying to suck the most users in. They're probably still working on those first impressions.

I don't even remember that. Other than some posts about Bud straying into Babble>, but that was long after 4/2002.

We've had precisely two shitstorms. In two years. If you count Gail as a shitstorm.

Nope.. telnet, ssh or client to utopia, the client uses the same ports that eschwa does. :-) Just send me a mail on eschwa saying it's you so I can get you validated quicker.

You know what you need to do? Take out an LJ, post the best articles that get posted on utopia, make an rss feed out of it, and publicize that strategically (i.e. "telnet here to participate...."). That way you're not just trying to pull people away from the same community of lusers. (Even if everyone from eschwa did migrate, utopia would just become eschwa.)

I have advertised on the web, and I have a small trickle of non-DOC community users. Most log in once and never again, scared away by the interface despite my addition of help files.

Speaking of Utopia, did it go boom? all of a sudden, things froze, and I can't log back on. (Think the sysadmin's done tweaking with the servers, so it's not on our end.)
