I'm fairly tempted--I'll ask the surgeon if I'm allowed to do this, or if he's worried about me getting whacked in the head that soon after having teeth pulverized in my mouth.

There isn't any whacking, don't worry. Most of the stuff is twist-escapes, and the couple strikes you learn, you don't actually practice w/ contact, so unless your partner really slips, you shouldn't be getting hit.
