Rodney holds up a woven straw ball. "What the hell is this? And why do we have a whole bowlful of them?"
"It's a ball, Rodney."
"I can see that it's a ball. What's it for? Kindling? Do we have a fireplace that I don't know about?"
"Rodneeeey." John takes the ball from Rodney's hand and places it back in the bowl with the others. "It's not kindling."
"No?" Rodney picks up the bowl, cradling it in both hands. "So are they edible?"
"What? No, they're--"
"Why are they in a bowl if they're not edible?"
John snatches the bowl away. One ball flies out of the bowl and bounces on the floor. "They're decorative, Rodney."
Rodney blinks. "Seriously?"
John places the bowl on the center of their occasional table. "Yes."
"But they're...balls. Made of straw. Or some kind of artificial straw-like material. How is that decorative?"
"It's woven banana leaf and they add texture and interest to a room." John retrieves the wayward ball and places it carefully on top.
"Oh." Rodney looks down at the bowl, then back up at John. "I thought our room was already quite textural and interesting."
"Fine," John says with a huff. He moves the newly placed ball to the other side of the bowl. Yes. Much better. "You know what? I'm going to bed." He spins on his heels and heads toward the bedroom.
"No, no, seriously," Rodney says, following quickly. "I like your balls, I really do--"
"Real funny, Rodney."
“They're very textural. And interesting.” Rodney catches up and tugs on John's sleeve. “Very, very interesting. And yet?” Rodney holds up a finger. “Decorative.”
John keeps his mouth firmly shut, doing his best not to smirk because he's peeved, damn it, but Rodney pushes him down on the bed and pulls his clothes off and by time Rodney finishes showing John just how interesting his balls are, John is ready to forgive him.
