It's funny how you opened the story with your parents' musical tastes compared to those of your friends' parents. I had the extreme between my own parents. My father is 12 years older than my mom and with him we listened to big band, jazz, and oooold country. My mom listened to current music and was much more "hip". While I'm now glad that I was exposed to such different tastes, back then I was so embarrassed for my dad and his radio/8 track selections!
I was really lucky with my parents. They listened to almost anything; classical, country, jazz, musicals, rock, disco, big band, etc. Basically, the only thing they DIDN'T listen to were "the golden oldies". I think that's why my music collection is so all over the board. Putting my iPod on shuffle would probably perplex the heck out of someone trying to figure out what kind of person I am. I'm not definable. ;)
I get you on the embarrassing stuff, though. Veeeerry occasionally my dad would listen to old gospel music and sing along at the top of his lungs. I'd crouch down in the back seat from the embarrassment.
I didn't get to go, but two of my friends did. I think they were really surprised that the band sounded BETTER live than recorded. That never happens. I'm glad you had a great time.
P.S. Further proof it was an older crowd-- My friend was shushed by another person in the crowd for talking. :)
Confession time -- Kathy and I are occasional shushers. I don't mind short conversations, but when I've paid big bucks for my ticket and I can't hear the band over the guy with the loud voice sitting directly behind me talking for 15 minutes straight with his friend about the NFL stats he's looking at on his phone, I get a bit irritated. The worst was when we had to hear a lady behind us spend a considerable amount of time talking with her friends about how her boobs get bigger only when she gains weight. Ugh. We're never rude about it, we just ask if they could lower their volume a bit because we're having trouble hearing.
But yes, the Eagles were awesome live and in some cases, yes, they sounded better live than recorded. :)
I too am with you on the enjoying heavily produced dance-y music but I love me some good old fashioned REAL music performed by and written by normal people and heavily imperfect but I love it because of those imperfections.
What a great time you must have had! (except for the farter. I have a dog, I can sympathize) :)
The thing about the Eagles, though, was that they were just as good live - if not better - then their recordings. The iconic guitar part at the end of Hotel California was FANTASTIC and about brought the house down. Now, that's impressive. :)
It was, really, such a good time and a great trip down memory road.
I"m so glad they were awesome. It's great to go see a concert and appreciate the songs more done live than on recordings -- that's so not the norm. :)
And I know what you mean about parents and their musical tastes. my dad never made it past about 1940 though my mom was a fan of Neil Diamond, Abba and Nana Mouskouri. I do love listening to my 80's but I'm trying to be a more progressive mom and appreciate the newer stuff we find on Rockband (seriously, it's my entire musical education these days) so my kids and I can enjoy much of the same stuff. Tiim likes stuff like Pearl Jam and Nickelback (ugh) and Ian loves the Beatles and anything remotely 80's pop (like Huey Lewis and the News) and Nikolas is pretty easy at this point. He sings along with anything. :)
