Dude, how cool about you being Tamil. Vaanakkam! :D I enjoy Tamil movies occasionally. Most Tamil stars are old dudes but some guys are actually pretty hot, and good actors etc. Not as pretty as Bollywood dudes but Tamil films can be thought-provoking (Maniratnam films) and good entertainment..

I got into Bollywood through school - they showed us K3G as an example of Indian popular music in music class. I was hooked, even though K3G isn't my favourite Bollyfilm ever.

Doramas - this one's easy - dangermousie. :D!

Vannakam! Hehe. Can you believe there is no way to say hello in Tamil?! Vannakam literally means welcome, come in etc. It's still cute nonetheless ( ... )

Yeah, heroines are usually useless characters in Tamil films.. That sucks. The clichés are there, yeah, definitely.

I've seen Kannathil Muthamittal (that's the spelling on the DVD cover, not sure how correct it is!), I liked it a lot! I also love Madhavan, he's a great actor. Very cute, too. I also thought the Tamil version of Mani's Yuva was better than Yuva, better cast etc. I also loved Iruvar.

Shankar films can be cool. I find Anniyan ridiculous but oh so very entertaining. Vikram's totally a favourite of mine, even if he portrays stereotypical characters.

I'm sort of zoning out of Indian movies and giving doramas space on my "to-watch" lists but sure, Tamil movie recs would be good, though I can't promise I'll ever get to see them. Have you seen many Tamil oldies, by the way? I saw one Sivaji Ganesan film and loved it (Thillana Mohanambal, he was in it with Padmini).

I think it was in 1988 or 1989 when a friend of mine dragged me to this new work-shop with Indian temple dances. Little did I know that from that first lesson onwards I was a) hooked on Bharatanatyam and Odissi dances and b) a deep love for the dance numbers of masala movies had been ingrained.
I watched masala filmi religiously (esp. all the angry young man movie of Amitabh from the 70's) up till the mid 1990's when the only Indian dance teacher moved away and my source for lessons and VHS tapes was gone. It only started back in 2004 again when I happened to come across a DVD wallah in my hoemtown and I discovered the wonderfulness of SRK.

As for doramas ... I met dangermousie through Bollywhat.com and she is the culprit who got me hooked on doramas :) The rest is, as they say, history ( ... )

Oops, showing my age here :)

I wouldn't call it professional as it was more of a community work-shop, but our teacher who was French had studied in India and I had 7 years of casual Bharatanatyam training, which is nothing compared to how hard they study it in India. But we did some performances and Hindi ppl told us, apart from our very Western looks, we surely made it appear to look like the real thing. And it kept me fit!!

Looks like dangermousie got everyone hooked on dramas
Yep, she is the guilty party!!! :)
but what I like evenmore is that although she started a lot of ppl from the Bollywhat.com forum on watching doramas, we all seem to prefer more or less different genres, like kdrama, twdrama or jdrama. I tend more towards jdramas, whereas dangermousie tends more to kdramas and so on. It is wonderful to see so many varieties and meeting new ppl.

Your stories are cute ^^ My first exposure was Meteor Garden about 4 years ago. I liked it a lot but grew out of it pretty quickly 'cause uni was time consuming. But not long ago, I think it was mid last year, I discovered the greatness that is Goong, and that's how I started getting into the Asian dramas fandom. In fact, this whole new fandom is actually what got me active in LJ again. I used to have nothing to say but now I want to blather a LOT about the stuff I've watched and want to watch! LOL.

I'm not very much into Bollywood, though in Indonesia we get a lot of Bollywood shown on local TV :D

Mangas? I've started to read 'cause I got curious after watching the drama (eg. Goong, Full House). But I've always had a soft spot for a good anime (mostly Hayao Miyazaki stuff).
