Well, in theatre, you use a wood called luan for just about everything. It's cheap and it covers a lot. We needed it to look like bamboo, a'la South Pacific, so I did a base coat of yellow(ochre), followed by another coat of dry-brushed dark yellow, then light yellow, followed by another coat of dry-brushed dark brown. I'll take a picture of it and post the evolution of the set. It all makes sense once you see it. ;)
