A journal article entitled Maternal capital and the metabolic ghetto-blah, blah, smart stuff. I'm quite impressed by the researchers' attempt at making an interesting article title.

Of course they ruin it with the abstract: metabolic syndrome derives in part from a disparity between the homeostatic "metabolic capacity" of vital organs and the " ( Read more... )

Fine, on the very very rare occasions I grace school with my presence. I am SO sick of it and it has NO BENEFIT. I am taking nutritional epidemiology-we have discussed nutrition assessment, anthropometric measurements, and ways to quantify intake. WHICH IS ALL I DID IN UNDERGRAD AND INTERNSHIP. I had no idea one could talk about this so much. Though the quiz that included "what is the formula for bmi?" was nice. I have a research methods class where I have to write my thesis. That is what I am looking at as I have no idea for a topic. It needs to cover epi and maternal/child health so it can count for my other classes! But I have seriously had the same methods class 4 times. Plus, she records the lectures and puts them online. Ha. I have an MCH class which is interesting, sometimes. It is the only one where I feel like I am actually getting information that is somewhat new. I also have an hour seminar which is really guest lecturers for CME. So it has nothing I can use and is way over my head. The last one was on brown adipose tissue ( ... )

Why is adipose tissue in chickens brown??? Dare I ask. How gross.

Yeah, I'm having to take a research class this semester, too, even though I took two semesters of research in psych the first time around.

Keep us updated on everything.

And, I have a question. Noah developed a lactose intolerance (common among Asians). Anyway, the doc said to give him soy milk instead, but the research out there about the synthetic estrogen contained in soy beans kind of concerns me. So, I am giving him almond milk as an alternative and supplementing his calcium needs through other sources. Any opinion on any of this???

Well, there is a lot of interest in brown fat. I don't know tons about it, but it is present in human babies and in like seals or something. Akin to blubber. It is very metabolically active and kind of awesome. But, it was thought that it disappeared as you aged. So there is tons of research trying to find out how to get it back into grown humans. The thinking now is that it is maybe present in some adults, but they aren't sure how or why. So kind of interesting, but seeing as how I don't do lots of lab stuff, not very practical for me ( ... )
