more out writing

Today I resurected a manuscript for middle school aged kids. I had written it several years ago and thought it was wonderful. It had several close maybes and many rejections before I stopped sending it out. As I read it now, I realize how passive my voice was. I am now making it more active. I got my first rejection slip when I was 9 (amusingly enough, it was from Asimov's). I was thrilled and waved it around the house, skipping and absolutely over-the-top giddy. My Mom finally asked why I was so happy with the rejection.

My reply?... "Only REAL writers get rejection letters."

In fact, the first time I got a piece of writing accepted, my first gut reaction wasn't glee, it was horror..."Give it back you beasts! It's not ready! I'm not done yet!"

Go fig :)
