[Introduction] A horrid turn of events

Jan 14, 2011 00:37

The coach ride to Bath proves utterly imperilous, with no great calamity than a stop at an inn -- its taproom sadly lacking in sinisterly scarred ruffians or raddled wenches with sharp tongues, much less a kitchen with a fat, surly chef cuffing the kitchen boys. Once they resume their journey, they nearly turn back to the inn, when Mrs. Allen ( Read more... )

What's this nonsense about feeling at ease? There's an app dragon for that.

Temeraire, all 110 feet worth of him, is lounging by the lake. It's too cold to swim, but he's enjoying the view that he'll have from his soon to be built pavilion and would not mind the company.

Thought I'd go for dramatic. Let me know if there's anybody else you'd like. They're all pretty strange. ^^

"I have! There are many good people here, though some are frightened of me." Like you, he doesn't say. "And Captain Bulge is very helpful and Brienne is kind and has told me that she is a warrior."

"That must feel wonderful, to have such kind people to make this place feel like a home," she says, rubbing him under his chin. "I hope your Captain finds his way here: I would think that he would, if someone like me could find their way here."

"I am lucky, but I do still miss my Captain. Bulge flies with me sometimes, but it is not the same. Do you fly?"

"Oh, no, I've never flown," she says. "But, I would like the chance to fly, if it were offered to me." She's excited by the prospected, but is afraid to ask outright, not wanting to seem rude or imposing.

"Captain Bulge is going to make a proper harness for me. When he is finished, perhaps you may ask him if you may join us."

"I think that I would enjoy that very much, indeed!" she says, trying to sound proper, but she's quivering with anticipation and excitement. A dragon who is a good being and who has a rider of his own. "So do all dragons have riders? Is that how it is done?"

"We all have Captains or companions. Laurence is my captain and my companion, but he is not here so Bulge will be my captain. Brienne has said she would also assist so perhaps I have two now."

"That sounds wonderful! You must feel more at home here than you did when you first found yourself here," she says, clearly happy for the dragon.

Just learned there is a new rewrite ala "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", of Northanger Abbey that is due out in May: "Northanger Abbey and Angels and Dragons".

"In a way. I do miss Laurence. What of you? Have you met anybody here?"

"I've not met many people, but I've met a lady in white and a warrior, and I've also met a lovely young man with green eyes," she says. "But I look forward to meeting as many people who dwell here as are willing to introduce themselves."

"That is good. Many humans here are very kind, if skittish. They are afraid of me, and I have not even done anything bad here!"

She pats his nose again, comfortingly. "I suppose that your size would startle someone unaccustomed to your size," she says. "And there are likely others who have read the same foolish stories as I have. Perhaps if I were to tell them there is no need to fear you, they might consider befriending, as I have."

"I am not so big," he counters, still pleased with the attention. "Maximus is bigger than I am. But I am not frightening."

"No, certainly not: startling, perhaps, to one who isn't accustomed to your kind, but hardly frightening once one gets to know you," she says, smiling up at him.
