[Open Post] Lo, the summer is soon dead

Sep 15, 2013 13:38

At times Genkai really doesn't like going outside much during the summer months, it's often too loud in her brain and the usual compliant: too hot. But Autumn is nearly here, both the living things and the sun, those conspirators in summer sometimes unbearable for her are mellowing out a bit ( Read more... )

She might come upon the young man in the tunic and sleeveless jacket of a Western knight of the medieval age, armed with a sword and practicing his form on the lawn in the side yard of the house. He moves with an awkward sort of ease: clearly he's made up his own form, but it should also be clear that there's a deadliness about him nonetheless.

Genkai doesn't disturb the sort-of knight while he's busy practicing. So she'll merely watch until he's done.

The young man eventually grows aware of his audience, and he pauses, raising his sword in a salute before sheathing it. He'll fold his hands before him, then bows to Genkai. "My venerable lady, forgive me for not greeting you sooner: I was rather wrapt in my form," he says. "I am Sir Parsifal, Knight of the Grail."

The Grail? As in the Arthurian Legend? She shakes her head.

She should be clearly used to things like this now.

"It's alright, I didn't want to disturb you. I am Genkai."

Here's something you don't see very often: a small, purple, horse-shaped creature with a pack over its withers, roaming under the trees, looking up at them. And on further inspection, Genkai might spy the teeny horn peeking through the critter's forelock, an orchid-colored glow surrounding it, echoed by a similar glow that surrounds a scroll and a ballpoint pen that hover before her, the pen jotting something on the page.

"So many kinds of leaves, and they appear to be staying on just fine," the critter notes.

If Genkai were a ordinary old lady, she would claim to be going senile right now. Because it's a talking horse, still she tries to remain calm as she stares at the creature.

Better not to disturb something so strange.

That something strange might look up, finally diverted from its ruminations. The scroll rolls up and the pen tucks into the roll of papers, guided by a soft orchid light. "Oh, hello, I didn't see you there," the critter says, in a chirpy voice. "I got a bit involved in jotting some notes about the leaves on the trees here."

"Why would you do that?" She looks over at them. "Aside from the type of tree they come from, that iss what they are."

Should Genkai venture up to the house, she might find Cathy at work at a table in the main room, needle and thread in hand as she sews inside the fold that runs along the middle of several pieces of paper. She's binding a signature of pages for her next book, and given the level of technology, she's accustomed to hand-binding. One time that she's glad her mother taught her to sew.

Well, books do catch her attention, let alone one being hand bound. So Genkai asks: "Pardon, what is it that your working on?"

The young lady's hands pause as she works the needle through the papers, and she looks up. "I am binding the pages of a new book which I wrote recently," she replies. "It shall be the third that I wrote since my arrival in this place.

"I am Miss Catherine Morland, formerly of Fullerton," she adds. "Perhaps you have read one of my previous efforts, Madame...?"

"Genkai. And no, I believe I haven't. Mind if you can give an explanation of what sort of books do you write?"

What if she reads them and gives caustic criticism?

Titus has been playing hooky from his lessons with Genkai, just as he regularly ran off from his teachers in Gormenghast. But Genkai can probably find her errant student easily. He's currently lounging on a wicker sofa on the porch, reading a rather silly romance novel written by a friend of his sister's.

And she finds you Titus, she wonders what has been up with you lately. Especially what has been going on that you can't visit her.

"Titus?"

He might close the book a bit too quickly, looking up at Genkai, wide-eyed but keeping his lower face relaxed and not yet rising from the sofa.

"Lady Genkai?" he asks, innocently, knowing this is not going to end well. There may be a bit of a deer in the headlights look in his face.

"It's been awhile since we've seen each other. How have you been?" She asks.

Merlin will be out as as well, he's getting ready for the winter - for himself, and his.... little family.

He's a happy man, really. Toph isn't Nimue, and that's fine. She's other, as this place is other, as he, too, is becoming other. He's got about him the look of a young father while he in fact isn't a father, or all that young anymore, and he'll be come upon off a trail.

He's got a fire, and smoke, and some game meat that's already prepared.

Merlin is smoking, and this time, it's not a pipe.

Of course smoking meat does obvious things to one's nose, and the old lady follows the scent until she finds Merlin. By now, she's caught a few fish herself and is feeling rather generous if Merls is willing to share the fire after he's done.

"Good day, Merlin."

He doesn't turn around because he needs to finish his operation, but he does sneak a look over his shoulder, and a smirk.

"And to you, Genkai."

"Mind if I ask what you're cooking?" Genkai asks out of pure curiousity.
