[Hisoka-wolves] in_summer_leaf May 28 2011, 06:17:32 UTC
Hisoka is just cleaning up his workshed, covering his partially constructed canoe with a tarpaulin, putting away his tools. He picks up a broom and sweeps up the wood and birchbark scraps. He opens the door and whisks the sawdust out into the long grass.

Night is falling, and he is at the edge of the forest, up a long rise from the lake. Still holding his broom, he looks off towards the water, which ripples softly under a pale round moon. Even from this distance, he can hear water lapping, and an occasional splash of a fish or a frog. He has very sharp ears.

He turns his head slowly, picking up the rustle of the pines, the squawk of a screech owl. He is not easy. It is as though he is waiting to hear other, unknown noises. The forest noises suddenly cease, as though every leaf, bird, or animal is holding its breath.

[The wolves can mess him up some. He'll fight back, of course. XD]

Out in the distance, a howl is heard, and atop the cliffs, if Hisoka is looking in that direction, he'll see a lone wolf detaching itself from the landscape, serenading the sky.

He certainly looks harmless from where he is.

That's because the danger is much closer than it seems.

Far off in the distance, in the place where the trees thin and leave a view of bare rock, Hisoka sees the wolf step out under the moon. The young man's hair rises on his head as he hears that wolf-song begin.

This is partly because of his memories of the Forest of Bydan, and especially the Western Woods, where he never knew what he might run into. And it is definitely related to Feanor's warning regarding Morgoth's creatures.

His eyes scan the edges of the trees up the hillside, the shadows beneath them. Then he turns towards the open doorway of the shed, to replace the broom.

Following Hisoka's turn, another howl is heard, this one, much closer.

Then another, and another, from various points surrounding the shed. Sauron's wolves are getting ready, preparing to fight, preparing to kill.

This is their preparatory dance and song.

Hisoka whirls around, letting the door swing free. He lifts the only weapon that is in his hands at this instant, the broomstick, and prepares to take a serious whack at the first wolf to reach him.

A wolf approaches him from out of the darkness, growling, watching him carefully, eying its prey.

It's not afraid at all.

Hisoka eyes the wolf, too. He is poised with both hands lightly grasping the broomstick, as though it were his weapon of choice. His green eyes light up.

"So, are you all growl and no action?" he asks, softly.

Another wolf comes out of the darkness then, growling low in its throat. The two might start to circle him, very carefully.

Hisoka has placed his back to the shed, so there is one direction they can't jump him from. He estimates they will spring the instant they have separated widely enough, one from his right and one from his left. He doesn't wait for that to happen. The broomstick slashes downwards, straight for the rightmost wolf's nose.

The rightmost wolf yelps as the broomstick connects, and twists away, but the one furthest left jumps as Hisoka turns, lunging for his back, to knock their prey facedown.

Hisoka, luckily, has not fully turned his back. From this position it is possible to lift his left foot, clad in a heavy, steel-toed, leather-soled work boot, pivot and aim a sideways snap-kick at the leaping wolf's face. If it connects, it may be with enough force to break bones.

The wolf is hit and falls to the ground with a pitiful whine. In the distance, more movement is audible, and a series of howls clamor.

This won't go unpunished.

In the meantime, another wolf replaces the fallen one and makes a bid for Hisoka's thigh.

Hisoka hears the answering howls and thinks, Well, this is not good, is it?

As he feels the jaws closing on his leg, he reverses the stick and rams it at the wolf's nearest eye.

The eye is pierced and something liquid squirts out, probably splashing Hisoka's hand.

This however only infuriates the beast further, and he snaps his fangs again, lunges forward despite the visual impairment and the blood dripping down its nuzzle, desperate to tear its enemy apart.

The wolf has a solid purchase on Hisoka's leg before its eye is jabbed, and as it pulls its head back, Hisoka feels his own flesh tear. But thank goodness for high-quality heavy denim twill! -- the bite is nasty but not bone-deep.

With all his strength, Hisoka thrusts with the stick again, this time just as the wolf opens its jaws to snap. He aims to get it between his thigh and the upper jaw, jamming it hard into the wolf's soft palate or into the back of its throat, hoping to bruise, rip, or break into one of those soft tissue structures. As it snaps its teeth again, the wolf's forward lunge knocks Hisoka off balance, and he prays the added momentum has aided him to do some real damage.

The stick enters the wolf's throat, and with the added momentum of the trip, it dives in further, piercing the esophagus and then a lung, and the wolf gurgles blood before it keels over.

It's quite possible, however, that in the process the stick will be stuck inside the animal, and require some heavy-duty tugging for appropriate removal.
