I can do general stuff, but prolly not anything to specific. I was living in one of the boroughs for a bunch of years and just moved away last month. But I never lived in Manhattan so if you have someone who did/does, she might be better.
See, I don't even know if I should set the whole thing in Manhattan. Two or three times I stayed in Manhattan, once a place called Park Avenue (?) and although I don't remember it clearly, I do recall that it seemed a bit too wealthy and well-off for what I need.
I am far from finished yet, but can I send you some parts, and you tell me if the area fits?
If you still need answers to questions, I'll be happy to help. I live in NJ now, but I work in Manhattan, and I've lived in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan in my day. :)
I live near NYC, but not actually in the city. I can probably offer some advice on things like slang if you need (though you seem to have plenty of offers) or general impressions, but can't help much with specifics - I hate going to the city unless there's a broadway play involved. Too many people, and walking through manhattan is like walking through a wind tunnel.
But I can say if Manhattan seems too 'rich' - you can try doing some research on some of the other areas, like Brooklyn, or Harlem - have a bit more grit to them. Personally, to make a comic reference, I think of Manhattan as 'Metropolis' and Harlem as 'Gotham City'. That's just my personal impression, but maybe that reference will help get your mind around it a bit, as someone who's not been in ages.
That said, even by Manhattan standards, Park Avenue is RITZY. It's the fancy part of town. :)
It wasn't my place-I was only a guest of sorts. Yes, it was a very pretty area. Despite the nightly dinner events I lost weight because NY is so big-I walked an hour at least every day I remember, just shopping.
I didn't think of Harlem! Good idea!
I thought of using the Bronx as well, although I don't think I've ever been there.
