yes, we (my husband and me) left japan on march 1st for good and are now in transit in thailand. we experienced the earthquake "live" via facebook chat, which was surreal and also terrifying. one feels so powerless.

on the other hand i am glad that we have the internet now. i was in japan, close to kobe in 1995 when the big kanto earthquake hit. there was no way to reach my family to tell them i was alright, because the phone line was down.

at least this time everyone was able to skype or facebook home.

Ah, good! I'm glad you only had a front row seat, instead of being part of the action.

I had been wondering about the smaller islands though; they're all too close to Japan not to have taken some kind of damage from the quake, at least, even if it did shelter some of them from the tsunami, but there's no real info about them in the news I'm seeing.

Are you getting better data where you are now?

it's more like standing too close to a painting. the confusing news snippets from different news agencies are agreeing on basic facts but disagreeing on the impact/consequences to be expected ( ... )
