Fic: Beautiful Mess (Deadliest Catch, Josh/Jake, NC17)

Jun 29, 2008 21:37

So I'm not really sure how I went from plotting AUs based on Deadliest Catch to writing RPS about two of the guys from the show. It's a slippery slope and I've been falling down it for a long time, so I should probably be used to it by now ( Read more... )

omg you! This was fantastic! I was really hoping you were going to write some Deadliest Catch but I didn't want to say anything 'cause I didn't want to pressure you. I love how you wrap-up longing, confusion and desire up with the hot. Good job, you!!!

Oh, Karl. I do love that icon.

Ahem. Sorry, I got distracted there for a second. Thanks for reading! I had no idea there were so many closet Deadliest Catch slashers, but it makes me immeasurably happy since I have already outlined six more fics. Not that I'm obsessed or anything.

You know, this was kind of delightful and wonderful (and also pretty freaking hot) but then sort of angsty. Why do you have to be all "they can never really be together," Caroline? God, you're such an...Ashlee Simpson.

(But, honestly, really really good. Now I have to figure out where I can find episodes of Deadliest Catch.)

*I'm* not an Ashlee Simpson. Josh is kind of an Ashlee Simpson, though, just going around nailing the first cute fisherman who bats his long, dark eyelashes.

Heh. It's angsty because of their lifestyle! It's not my fault they work on crab boats. But at the same time, I think Josh's dad would still love him if he was gay. He's that kind of guy. So maybe it's not all hopeless. You never know how things will turn out for the fictionalized versions of these very real people. (RPS is so creepy when you think about it logically!)

As for episodes, you can Netflix 'em. I am working on season one right now, since I just started watching two weeks ago. I'm not sure when Jake shows up, but I don't think it's until season three. Josh's boat isn't even on season one, so I'm still waiting for them to arrive. I like to have a complete chronology, though, so I'm watching from the beginning. Also, Mike Rowe's voice. ::draws hearts around it::

Yeah, Josh kinda does sound like an Ashlee Simpson. And Josh's dad should totally accept him...I mean, if Republican politicians can still love their gay daughters (in a totally hypocritical way), then manly men working on crab boats can totally accept their gay sons. (I totally have a kink for coming out stories...I think it goes back to my happy ending love, so I enjoy people coming out and saying 'fuck you we love each other' and having (some) people be all supportive and loving of them. Yay happiness!)

I have so much to netflix. I still have 2 seasons of Starsky & Hutch to get through, and I'm kind of distracted from them by Barney Stinson at the moment (but I've entered season 3, so there's not too much longer now...and I am SO GLAD that Ted and Robin have finally broken up, thank god). But I get you on starting from the beginning - I am so that way with everything.

I now have a Deadliest Catch folder on my computer (right between Dark Wing Duck and Degrassi). And I've watched another episode, but I still can't differentiate between the crews. Is there a primer somewhere for this show?

Not that I'm aware of. I don't think the fandom, such as it is, is that organized. There are bios on the Discovery site, but only of the captains. The Northwestern has a website with crew bios because Sig's a fame whore (he also has a Myspace), but Cornelia Marie's site doesn't work right, and I haven't looked for any of the others.

You are so right about the discovery_slash and the incest. That's all there is. *makes face* Woe. Seriously, there was even the obligatory post by someone complaining for getting flamed for writing incest RPS. And all the comments about people overreacting over RPS and just not getting it (the flame was rather...crass), but no one willing to make the concession that, y'know, posting incest RPS publicly isn't all that great for the people featured in it. Can you imagine, I don't know, googling yourself, and coming across porn featuring you and your father or brother? Ew.

Yeah, it's gross. And the thing is, I write RPS so I get that I don't have a lot of stones to throw, but there's still a big difference between 'statistically speaking, not *every* one of these guys can be 100% straight' and 'hey, he said he loved his brother on After the Catch! They must be having hot sex!' Because you know at least some of them google themselves when they get the chance, and finding slash about you and some random guy you may or may not be friendly with is a sight different than finding incest. At least they have the good sense to make the LJ comm members only.

There's a huge difference between the two. I really just don't get how incest managed to become the new thing in fan fiction. Like people don't even bother to consider the issues with it. Especially when you're writing it about real people. I mean, wtf.

I know! It's so fucked up. I mean, it's squicky enough for me when it's fictional characters like in SPN, but RPS? That's so beyond weird. At least the guys from Discovery are fairly unlikely to be googling themselves (except Sig and his Myspace account), but bandom knows all about RPS and there's incest fic for at least one of those bands. That's not right.

I love it, and I do not watch Deadliest Catch. Dude! And I am so pleased that you're writing again.

(Thank you for the helpful primer - it meant I had a clear picture of who you were talking about, which is all I ever ask.)

Full disclosure: I love that icon because it makes me think of my mom's dog, who has a stuffed carrot fetish. He likes to carry them in his mouth.

You're welcome for the primer! Thanks for reading; I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I don't know what it is about these two that fascinates me; probably the very testosterone-laden, misogynist world in which they dwell.
