The way I see it is that Castiel is on the same journey as Dean was. His father figure in whom he trusted started to give him back nothing, as you say. He wasn't even around enough to ask advice from and it was left to Cas to navigate an apocalypse and a rift with his family when all he had to guide him was his own inner voice and two humans who didn't understand him.

Cas was always supposed to be a servant, a soldier. Suddenly he realised that he had to take responsibility which he had never had before, and to me this reaction, to say 'Fine,I'll do it all myself' is an almost teenaged response to being deserted by his father and threatened by his brothers.

That said I really hope they don't go too far with this. I hope it's a season arc and not something they're going to try and drag out over the next few years.

Absolutely. It's absolutely a teenaged response to the fact he's getting no guidance from anyone, not from his father, his brothers, no one. It's his way of doing what he thinks is best.

I hope so to, tbh. Like I said, I don't want him to be the Big Bad who ends up dead at the end of the season because he's 'evil', but nor do I want him constantly hovering in the background for season after season, always there, always threatening. Give him his conflict, let the boys do what they have to, redeem him and then carry on with Season 8. ♥

Hey, I was over at your journal to read your fic but then I saw this and just wanted to pop in to say that I found myself nodding along to your reactions. I too was appalled by the way that Dean treated Castiel in some episodes this season and Sam too, especially the minimalising of his war when calling upon Cas to help them out (I guess I can rationalise their behaviour by reminding myself that they had been used well and truely by both the factions of heaven and hell to fulfill a questionable prophesy but it still left me feeling no small amount of rage towards the brothers). And I get that Dean had a valid point when he asked Castiel to just stop with the Crowley deal cos he and his brother had been there done that and it never ended well when you threw in with an agent of evil(not that he made any effort to explain his reasons), but I totally agree with you on the whole trust issue. He just wanted Dean to believe in him the same way that he believed in Dean. I too found it sad that the brothers had so little faith in Castiel, and ( ... )

I'm so glad this helped! I've been mulling things over all weekend trying to rationalise it, so I guess the fact I've been affected by it means I'm totally invested in the character and the storyline. I just feel so sorry for Castiel, and a little worried about where this can go next season. I really hope the writers do the right thing...

I love your idea--I would kill to see Castiel riding around in the back of the Impala, fighting monsters. You're right though, it is the Sam and Dean show and will always remain that way, but I hope that they don't go back to that at the expense of probably the only TV character I really, really care about :)

Yes yes, exactly...and this is totally going to sound all 13-year-old-girl but I am heart sick over where they've taken Castiel (I mean I can appreciate the change in scope for his character but I dont want him to become the next Big Bad for the looming season!). Hopefully there is redemption in his immediate future *clings like a clinging thing to this hope*

And yeah, I really really care about his character too - just in case that gushing didn't blow my oh so cleverly composed cover ;) - and I can only place my faith in the writers recognising that they cannot rewind the show back to the emotional state of seasons 1-3 cos there is so much more of a rich tapestry to explore now. Gah, rambling again..sorry!

Also your icon is most excellent...if I could figure out how to put one of those little hearts in, it would be here!
