100 novels

The Torygraph today lists 100 novels everyone should read (here). These lists are always entertaining and arguable but I discover that I've read remarkably few of them so it would seem to be a ready made wishlist. It seems a good plan for the year to try and read the ones I haven't.

27. I *own* at least 40 of them though so I don't need to start shopping yet which is good because it's January I am poor :-)

However I think my textbooks should come first sadly.

I always find these lists rather odd. They seem to focus mostly on the 'classic' authours rather than more modern authors like Bukowski or Fante or Coupland, whose work, in my opinion, far exceeds anything written by Austen and her lot.

I thought this one was relatively well balanced and less stuffed with 19th century English preposterousness than they usually are, although it did make a up a reasonable percentage.

Do you have a top 20 of things you think everyone should read?
