Question - What is this Skype all about??

Okay I am not sure what I am missing here so I thought I would ask - what is this Skype all about?  From what I can gather it is a VoIP like Vonage correct?  What makes it differnt from a Vonage type service - well besides the monthly costs etc

I've used Skype off and on for over a year. It's a very well done telephony service but I have found with computer based voice communications, I can't multitask as easily, and the clicking of the keys distracts the listener. They invariably stop and say..."who are you chatting with other than moi!"

On the surface, Vonage and Skype are similar products--and indeed, they both support voice communication via VoIP--but they philosophically fairly different products
