Wow... just wow.

Typically I don't participate in such emails, even those with extremely good points that I agree with and/or with patician type set ups. However this email, that I recieved from my dad tonight has some simply frightening statistics. Please note that I am absolutly not against ANYONE who immigrates to the US LEGALLY, I don't care what nationality ( Read more... )

Disturbing. Angrifying. As a related aside, in my impromptu demographical observations, hispanic people are most likely to be completely aloof/bordering on rude to me while at work. But then, young black males are routinely the most polite and friendly, but guess who came in whith a knife for the register? WHatever. I'm in the boat with you on this one.

In the boat eh. Talk about illegal immigrants :P (It's a long slow ride to Cuba via canoe...good luck :) (at least you willn't have to push the canoe when you are in the ocean i guess))

I don't like illegal immigration, but boy do they ever make quick studies for my association, *cough sputter* I mean...yes.

But on a serious note. Our country should really fix this and demand that other countries hold themselves to a similar standard. We could also attempt to arrange a group of illegal immigrants to Mexico and rough things up a bit...see how long it takes to get them to fix their own problems.

*nods*

Cheers,

If you ever truly want to see something that will frighten you and perhaps sadden you; Go to the County courthouse in Cedar Rapids and sit in on "In custody initial appearances" 10:30 AM 1st floor, ask any of the people who work there and they will show you where it is.
On average 80% of the people who are shown for initial appearances are african american.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/taxes.asp

Looks like an updated version
For instance it lists a World Cop Soccer Game between Mexico and USA on Feb 15 1998 which didn't occure ( US and Mexico played each other in the lead up to that world cup cycle on the 20th of April 1997 in Foxboro Stadium which appreas to be in Boston, not LA. casting major doubts on the rest of that story)

Not that I'm a big fan of illegal immigration. but I'm less a fan of distortion of facts and the truth.

Ouch.
I know this is not your intention, but look at how racist that document is. It even insults the immigrants that came here legally. Yes, HISPANIC (not mexican, just calling someone mexican can be racist unless you KNOW they came from Mexico) culture is devoutly proud and resistant to change. They are literally trying to show the WORST of the culture to try and drive policy. That's like trying to show a history of domination by whites over other races by only talking about Slavery, Hiroshima, and concentration camps. If you want to see what I mean, compare all of those to stats on African Americans in New York and Irish Americans in Boston. Remeber back when they wanted to teach ebonics to teachers so they could talk that way to their class?
I am disgusted with the document, Illegal immigration is bad, but is it really going to be solved by making equally egregious blanket statements about a culture by its lowest common denominator?

I'm glad Ryan brought up the Snopes link. I hadn't thought to check, but I should have; Snopes is usually my first stop when I hear political statements sent around by e-mail. Also, I agree with Phil.

In any case, even if all this stuff were true, my reaction would be what it usually is when people bring up the problems of illegal immigration: yes, these things suck, but many of them would be quite easily solved by making these people legal citizens. Seriously. Do that, and they can get legal work, don't have as great an incentive to turn to crime, and aren't competing unfairly against legal citizens by being able to work for below minimum wage.

we also seem to forget that there was a great deal of crime and poverty at the turn of the century in New York during the great immigration booms. People forget that every group that immigrated to America had to fight for respect. Irish-Americans were treated horribly, were impoverished, joined gangs in New York. Almost every group that has come to the US has had to struggle through discrimination, poverty, and not knowing the language ( ... )
