It is very difficult to find time for gardening. When I get home I'm tired. Even if I can be bothered to do the work, it's often raining, or just unpleasantly cold. And of course socialising, gaming and other such activities get in the way ( Read more... )

With the carrots surrounded by onions and/or leeks, a (slightly inadequate) anti-carrot fly fence, and earlier harvesting, we got less carrot fly last year. But still some. I think it's pretty inevitable. Just accept the extra protein....

And any inadequacies you felt you got from the garden last year are almost certainly a result of the hideously garden-unfriendly weather, rather than neglect. For us, our leeks were good, and carrots, beans and rhubarb passable (at least the ones that germinated...), and everything else was mildly disasterous. Especially the tomatoes, which all went mouldy on the plants.

We grew our carrots last year in a big tub whose sides were about 18" off the ground, that seemed to do the trick.
