You get used to riding with traffic; it took me about two months to get used to riding on Broad Street, which I still don't like to do but I can do it now without startling at every single car that drives by.
Are there streetlights? It makes a world of difference if there are.
Alternatively you can get a mountainbike and off-road your way to work....

You've been out here, no streetlights, hence the 16 watt front headlamp, not so i can be seen, but so i can see.
Yeah, with the deer i'm not so afraid of hitting them, its more the idea of them attacking me that scares the bejeesus out of me. That would be muchos embarassing getting your ass kicked by a deer.
A mountainbike really wouldn't gain me much other than greater rolling resistance. Plus not having to walk my road bike across some areas, but generally the only way to go would be along Loudoun to the trail, which is paved.

You do get used to riding in traffic, believe me. I do things in Philly that would have Mom going into panic attacks if she were to see me....
