Charlie ached every time he looked at Alex. Every time he watched her laugh, or comfort a patient, or the way she lit up when she solved a particularly tricky problem, or the general glow that grew as her pregnancy progressed. Ached with longing. Ached with sadness. Ached with regret. This wasn't how he'd envisioned things. Wasn't how he'd planned for it to go. He'd wanted children--they both had--but he'd wanted to them to be planned. To be created and born after he was already married to Alex.
