Chapter 5
“You like me, don’t you?” Yamapi smiled wider.
Ueda’s hands started to shake. He looked up to see everyone was staring at him, either suspiciously or happily. Ryo was the angriest of anyone but Ueda wasn’t sure why exactly. His brain was too muddled with thoughts to work correctly.
Out of nowhere, and out of sheer stupid impulse, he replied, “Yeah, I do.”
Maru and Koki were laughing to themselves and Yamapi was starting to get an obnoxious look on his face. Toma and Ryo were both very angry and looked like they would rip Ueda to shreds. He wasn’t sure why he said it but it was most likely a subconscious need to make Ryo jealous.
“That’s interesting,” Yamapi replied, rubbing his chin thusly, “I guess I should’ve known but-I don’t like to be presumptuous.”
Toma rolled his eyes and Ryo just continued scowling.
“Ah,” was Ueda managed to say.
“Well, you are pretty cute, Ueda-kun. I’m actually kind of glad that you like me. You’re much better than my ex, anyways,” Yamapi laughed.
“Uhm,” Ueda spoke only in detached noises.
He looked at Ryo nervously and only got a turning of the other’s head in response.
“So-do you want to go out with me?” Yamapi asked.
Koki and Maru stopped laughing; Ryo and Toma both looked shocked. No one was more shocked than Ueda, who almost fell over from the surprise.
“Ah?”
“Great!” Yamapi smiled, “I never thought I’d end up dating a guy, though. But I guess it doesn’t matter since you’re cute enough to be a girl, Ueda-kun.”
Ueda resented Yamapi’s last statement but didn’t feel the need to defend himself. Apparently, he didn’t realize that he had just become Yamashita Tomohisa’s first boyfriend. He wanted to say something to Ryo, of all people, but his roommate just walked away.
Yamapi gave Ueda a warm embrace, but Ueda couldn’t respond. He wanted to go after Ryo but he thought it might not do him any good. Yamapi got up and walked away proudly, with Toma close behind. The latter kept looking at Ueda and shaking his head angrily.
“WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU TWO?!” Ueda finally yelled at Maru and Koki for their “great idea”.
“We wanted to see if Nishikido-kun would get jealous if we told him you liked someone else. I guess it worked,” Maru laughed.
Koki nodded in agreement, “You can always tell if someone likes you if they have that kind of reaction to news that you may like someone else. Nishikido-kun got super angry when we told him.”
“But, hey, did you notice the look on Ikuta-kun’s face? Man-he didn’t seem too happy either.”
Ueda realized what the two had just said. Toma had looked very angry upon hearing the news and Ueda was almost sure it was because the other boy had possibly have some secret feelings for someone, most likely Yamapi. If anything bad was too happen, he wanted to hear from Toma exactly where he stood.
A little while after dinner, he managed to find Toma who was roaming the hallways a bit.
“Um-Ikuta-kun?”
Toma turned around suddenly, looking very angry when he saw Ueda.
“Ah?” Ueda made the same noise he had been making all night.
“What do you want?”
“I just-I just-I just wanted to know why you were so angry-are so angry-right now?”
Toma grunted a bit before sighing deeply.
“I’m sorry-it’s just-hearing that you liked Yamapi just made me-I don’t know.”
“Made you what?”
“I don’t know-I guess jealous?”
“I thought so,” Ueda nodded his head, knowing exactly why the other boy had been acting strangely.
“It’s just that-why couldn’t you like me?!”
Ueda’s eyes bugged out. This was not the response he was expecting.
“What?!”
“I mean, I’m a nice guy, right? I’m decent-looking, aren’t I? Why couldn’t I be the one you liked?”
“Ikuta-kun, do you-”
“Why Yamapi? He’s an idiot and he’s not even into guys. I’m a much better choice, don’t you think so?”
“Wait, what?”
“It’d be nice to be the object of someone’s affections, once in a while. Why is it always him?”
“Oh, so you’re not jealous because you like Yamashita-kun or because you like me. It’s because you’re just jealous that someone likes Yamapi instead of you.”
“What?!”
“Huh?” Ueda smiled nervously.
“Who the hell said I liked Yamapi?! Or you?! I’m sorry but you’re not my type! Neither of you are!” Toma ranted, sounding shocked that he had been accused of such things.
Ueda sighed with relief, “Good. I would’ve felt guilty about leading you on or anything.”
“You’d feel guilty-about leading me on? But aren’t you doing that already with Yamapi?”
Ueda’s heart jumped; he had been figured out.
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he stuttered.
“Oh come on, Ueda-kun, I know you. I know who you really like.”
“W-What?”
“I mean, I’ve seen the way you look at Ryo and I can tell from all your bickering that you really like him. It’s no wonder you got jealous of him and his girlfriend.”
“EX-girlfriend,” Ueda emphasized.
Toma just laughed at Ueda’s desire to emphasize that Ryo had an ex-girlfriend. He laughed a bit before looking at Ueda intently. This caused Ueda to feel a bit uncomfortable.
“I’m right, aren’t I?”
Ueda twitched, ready to deny it but instead just nodded his head, admitting that he had a crush on his roommate.
“I KNEW IT!” Toma shouted.
“SHH!”
Toma giggled, “Ah, sorry. It’s just I was so sure-Yamapi thought I was nuts for saying so. Maybe he was in denial because he-”
“What?”
“I think Yamapi really likes you.”
Ueda’s heart did a few jumps before he sighed deeply.
“He does?”
“He hasn’t admitted to it, but I think it’s pretty obvious. He does talk about you a lot and he’s really quick to defend you whenever Ryo badmouths you. But I do too; just not as much as he does. I’m not sure exactly when it started-but it probably started when his girlfriend dumped him and you were the only one who was really sympathetic to him. He told me about how he spent the night with you guys and how you were willing to protect him against Ryo’s insults. This is all speculation on my part but so far, I’ve been right about you and Ryo so I think I’m pretty good at knowing these kinds of things.”
Ueda didn’t say anything; he just nodded and stared off into space. After a few seconds of silence, Ueda looked at Toma and asked him something that neither of them expected him to.
“Do you-do you think that Ryo-kun-do you think that he-he--?”
“Likes you?”
Ueda gulped but nodded his head.
“I’m not too sure; Ryo’s usually easy to read with his emotions but ever since he started here, he’s been harder to read. Like his emotions aren’t so easy to distinguish from one another. He’s pretty much angry all the time but it’s pretty hard to understand why he’s actually angry.”
“I see.”
“Well, it’s not like there’s no chance. I just don’t want to tell you something that will give you false hope if I am wrong. I don’t know-maybe there’s a reason that Ryo’s gotten so closed off with his feelings. Who really knows?”
Ueda just continued nodding, looking like he wasn’t really listening when he was, in fact, taking to heart everything that Toma was saying to him.
“Well, I should go shower before bed. I don’t want to get yelled at by my roommate. He’s a real neat freak for some reason. Haha. Good luck with your ‘relationship’ with Yamapi. And don’t worry, I won’t tell Ryo.”
Ueda smiled nervously, nodding his head and waving goodbye to the other boy who ran down the hallway in the direction of the bathrooms. Ueda sighed with relief, though he still felt a little anxious. He knew he’d have to face Ryo eventually, and now that three of the people he knew had figured out his feelings, it was only a matter of time before Ryo found out as well.
When he went back to his room, Ueda expected Ryo to give him the silent treatment but he was surprised when Ryo started yelling at him. But instead of yelling at his roommate for the reveal of his supposed feelings for Yamapi, Ryo was yelling about stupid things like having left a lamp on for too long or leaving scissors out on a desk.
“And another thing, are you just an idiot or is there something wrong with your brain? I’m curious to know.”
Ueda shook his head, not willing to answer because this was one of the few times that he didn’t want to argue with his loud-mouthed roommate. He sighed and turned away, continuing with his homework.
“Hey, I’m talking to you! Are you listening? Or are you too busy thinking of Yamapi to listen to anything I have to say?!”
Ueda stopped what he was doing and looked up; he turned his head towards Ryo. Ryo looked a little startled but he stood his ground.
Ueda glared, “Who I think about is absolutely none of your business!”
“So you ARE thinking about him? Just what I thought,” Ryo pouted.
“What does that have to do with you, anyways?! Don’t act like you’re-jeal-ous-oh-”
Ueda smiled to himself, hiding the wide grin from a very confused Ryo.
“What did you just say?” Ryo asked in a serious voice with a face that matched.
Ueda stopped his self-deluding and looked at Ryo, curiously.
“Ah?”
“I-am-not-JEALOUS! I’m annoyed but not jealous so don’t start thinking stupid things like that!” he defended, unable to make a better case before walking out of the room.
Ueda sighed; he wasn’t sure what to think. He was remembering what Toma had told him earlier about there being a possibility that that sharp-tongued roommate of his could like him. He just wasn’t sure how big that possibility was at the moment.
The next morning, Ueda woke up to the loud knocking of someone outside his door. He checked to see if Ryo was still in bed and sure enough, the other boy was asleep and snoring very loudly.
“Stupid idiot,” Ueda mumbled as he got up out of bed to open the door.
He didn’t bother to check the peephole beforehand and was blind-sided by an unusually hyper Yamapi, who rushed into the room.
“Hey, boyfriend,” Yamapi giggled.
Not only was it completely unexpected to hear those words come out of Yamapi’s mouth, it was also very disturbing because of the way he said them.
“Uh-hi?” Ueda responded, confused.
“I’m not sure what to call you exactly-Ueda-kun sounds too formal. What’s your given name?”
Ueda blinked; Yamapi didn’t even know his real name.
“It’s Tatsuya.”
Yamapi’s eyes grew big.
“What a beautiful name! It really suits you-Tatsuya. Tatsuya-kun-Tatsu-TAT-CHAN!”
“Say what?”
“CAN I CALL YOU ‘TAT-CHAN’?” Yamapi grabbed Ueda’s hands and looked at him with big eyes, practically begging to use the endearing nickname.
Ueda gulped, “Uhm-sure? I haven’t been called that since elementary school but-”
“Tat-chan! I like the sound of that! It’s so frickin’ adorable and-it really suits you. You’re adorable-Tat-chan,” Yamapi smiled perversely, giving Ueda a bit of a creepy feeling inside.
Ueda smiled nervously and nodded his head. Yamapi smiled some more before hugging the other boy tightly.
“I’m going to let you get dressed. Since it’s Friday, do you want to skip class and go somewhere?”
“Hah?”
Ueda had never skipped school in his entire life and he wasn’t sure if this was the right time to start. Besides, skipping meant he wouldn’t be in homeroom with Ryo or get to do classroom rep duties with the other boy.
“I don’t know, Yamashita-kun.”
“Call me ‘Tomohisa’,” Yamapi smiled.
“Eh?”
“It’s my given name-or you can call me ‘Yamapi’ like Ryo and Toma do. OH! Better yet, ‘Pi-chan’,” Yamapi had the same enthusiastic smile on his face that he had when he was told about Ueda’s supposed feelings for him.
“Pi-chan?” Ueda gulped.
“Ah! It sounds so cute coming from you, Tat-chan. I’m so glad you and I are going out. I don’t think I can remember the last time I’ve felt this happy.”
There it was; the guilty feeling that was sure to come to Ueda sooner or later. He was leading Yamapi on in some hopeless effort to get Ryo jealous. Whether or not it would work was up in the air; regardless, Ueda was stupidly bringing Yamapi’s innocent feelings for him into the mix.
“Yamashita-er-Tomohisa-er-Pi-chan?”
“Yes-Tat-chan?”
Ueda couldn’t do it, he couldn’t tell Yamapi the truth. At least, not right now; not when the taller boy was looking at him with those wide eyes and that warm and endearing smile. He would speak up soon, just not at that moment.
“I’ll go out with you today. Just let me get dressed first, okay?”
Yamapi nodded, “Ok! I’ll be waiting!”
The taller boy ran out of the dorm room, shutting the door behind him. Ueda sighed deeply, he wasn’t expecting today to start out like this.
He jumped when he saw Ryo, sitting up in bed and scowling at him to no end.
“Oh, you’re up.”
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Ueda looked at Ryo more intently.
“What are you talking about?”
“I mean, what makes you think you won’t get in trouble for skipping class today?”
Ueda scoffed.
“Don’t act all concerned. It has nothing to do with you. Just go back to sleep-or get ready-just leave me the hell alone.”
“You shouldn’t lead him on like that.”
Ueda stopped; his heartbeat quickened.
“What?”
Ryo pulled off the covers and got up, crossing his arms and looking at Ueda, dead in the eye. Ueda’s skin prickled; being so close to Ryo still got him excited.
“If you don’t like him, then just tell him before things get too serious and you really break his heart.”
Ueda’s guilt came rushing back but he wasn’t going to let Ryo see a trace of it.
“W-What are you talking about? Of course, I like Yamashita-kun-I mean-Pi-chan.”
The name gave Ueda a bad taste in his mouth.
“Oh yeah, if you really like him, then you won’t feel tempted to react if I did this.”
Ryo put his face up close to Ueda’s, moving his arm up and placing it around the other’s waist and slowly drawing him near. Their lips were only inches apart and Ueda could feel Ryo’s warm breath surround him. He had never been so tempted in his life; he had never kissed another boy before and he was sure that Ryo would be the first.
Unfortunately, something wouldn’t let him go through with it.
He pushed Ryo away angrily, and grabbed his toiletries and ran for the bathroom. Ryo looked a bit disappointed but just shrugged his shoulders and stretched in order to wake himself up.
In the bathroom, Ueda locked himself in a stall and leant against the wall in order to catch his breath. He could feel his chest pound from the beating of his heart and he felt warm all over his face. He wiped his forehead only to find it damp with sweat. Not to mention that he felt a slight twinge in his pants. He banged his hand against the wall and suppressed the urges that were raging inside of him. After about a good five minutes of cooling down, he unlocked the stall and walked up to the sink.
He grew embarrassed when looking in the mirror only to see Toma at the urinal. The other boy zipped up before walking up to the sink, not saying a single word. Ueda stared at him as he washed his hands, half-expecting to be asked about the weird noises he had just been making.
He waited until Toma’s hands were dry and the paper towel was thrown away before saying anything.
“Aren’t you going to ask me what I was doing?!” he asked without thinking.
Toma turned and smiled a smile that sent chills down Ueda’s spine.
“I get it. I just don’t want to know the details. See you later,” Toma laughed, throwing Ueda a bit of a saluting gesture before walking out of the bathroom, whistling.
Ueda’s face went white; clearly, Toma had had the wrong idea. Ueda just sighed and washed his face and brushed his teeth before going back to his dorm room. Right as he opened the door, he saw Ryo standing, wearing nothing but his boxers, attempting to get into his uniform pants and shirt. Even though he knew Ueda was behind him, Ryo wasn’t quick to cover himself up like he normally would be.
Instead, he just stood, with his back to Ueda, knowing that the other boy’s eyes were directly on him. He turned his head and winked, licking his lips seductively. Ueda’s cheeks didn’t just turn their normal pink; they were dark red and Ryo could see the color change.
He turned to face Ueda directly, his chest bare and toned. His body did not look like that of a first year in high school, Ueda thought; no, he looked like he belonged in a men’s magazine, in underwear advertisements.
“Do you like what you see?” the younger boy smirked.
Ueda wanted to give into his temptation; he wanted to walk right up to Ryo, nod slowly and then kiss him like he had never kissed anyone before. He wanted to do it but he couldn’t. Not only would he feel guilty for betraying Yamapi, he also couldn’t let his pride be squashed by Ryo and his attempts at seduction.
“Nope, not a bit,” Ueda smirked back, winking and laughing sarcastically.
“Wait-what?!”
Ueda just laughed, walking out of the room and into the hallway. When out of Ryo’s sight, he leant against the wall, catching his breath, finding it harder to breathe. He had come close to giving into his desires but thankfully, he had not done so.
While panting loudly, Toma walked by and Ueda started to cough. Toma just nodded his head and then walked away with a slightly disgusted expression on his face. Once again, Ueda had been embarrassed by an unexpected run-in with Toma.
“Gawd!” he muttered under his breath.
“What’s wrong?”
Ueda jumped, he turned around and saw Yamapi standing behind him.
“Ah? Oh! Uh-nothing-just feeling a little-weird.”
“Eh?! Are you sick?! You’re sick, aren’t you! Do you want some soup?! I’ll have Toma go to the cafeteria and-”
“I’m not sick! Just feeling a little out of breath!” Ueda tried calming down the other boy who was growing more and more anxious for some odd reason.
“Okay-Okay-I’m good. That’s good that you’re not sick. I didn’t mean to get all worked up-it’s just-I thought maybe you were doing something so that you wouldn’t have to spend the day with me.”
Yamapi had the saddest expression on his face; he looked like a kicked puppy with his shoulders slumped and his lower lip sticking out in the form of a pout. He wasn’t making things any easier for Ueda, who was feeling so guilty for having worried him in the first place.
“It’s perfectly fine-I’m fine. I’ll just be ready in a moment. Wait a little longer and then we can go hang out, okay?” Ueda asked, putting his hand on Yamapi’s arm.
Yamapi didn’t say anything but just smiled and nodded his head furiously. He left Ueda alone and trotted down the hallway as happily as can be. No matter how seemingly annoying he was acting, Ueda found it to be a bit cute.
Ueda smiled nicely and walked into the room, unfortunately to find Ryo fully dressed and no longer in a seductive mood.
“Are you going to class or not?” the other boy scolded.
“Bite me,” Ueda snapped back, smiling while doing so. He pretended not to notice how angry Ryo was getting and chose instead to search for some clothes for his date with Yamapi.
Not much later, Ueda found himself standing at a street corner with Yamapi standing next to him, hands in his pockets and waiting for the light to turn. Both of them had received the dirtiest of glares from Ryo when they left but neither was willing to let it bother them.
It would have seemed strange to anyone else but to Ueda, this date was something to look forward to, at least a little bit. He had never hung out one-on-one with Yamapi before and since he had a good impression of the other boy, Ueda thought it might end up being fun.
And it started out that way, with the two going to eat a small food stand and then taking a walk through the park. The two sat down on a bench and looked over a small pond where a large group of ducks was, waiting to be fed by the two breadless boys.
“They’re all so cute!” Ueda squealed, looking at a family of ducks sitting in the grass nearby.
Yamapi smiled so widely, enjoying the way that Ueda was acting at that moment. He started to stare dreamily at the other boy but got embarrassed when the other boy took notice.
“Ah, I’m-I’m sorry,” he stuttered, looking away and turning his attention to the water.
Ueda just laughed, finding it cute as well that Yamapi was so nervous around him. Everything was going alarmingly well, with Ueda starting to see Yamapi not just as Ryo’s friend or just his classmate, but also a person with a good heart and a great sense of humor. Ueda felt a strange twinge in his stomach, something very similar to the way he felt when he first met Ryo. He disregarded it and continued to focus on his date with Yamapi.
The day was reaching a climax when Yamapi suggested that the two go see a movie together. Ueda thought he had it all figured out; this would be the moment where Yamapi would make his move, in the dark, with either a simple holding of hands or a full-on makeout session. Either way, Ueda was scared out of his mind at the thought of what Yamapi would do to him.
However, he agreed and the two made their way to the movie theater. As they waited in line, Ueda started to get lost in his thoughts. He was reminded of what Ryo had done earlier, twice, trying to seduce him. Ueda had seen Ryo’s body before but with the other boy looking like he was feeling the same thing as Ueda, it was hard not to think more erotic thoughts.
“Tat-chan?”
Ueda continued thinking of Ryo and was ignoring the person calling for him.
“Tat-chan??”
“Hmm?” Ueda turned and looked at Yamapi, who simply shrugged his shoulders.
“TAT-CHAN! IT IS YOU!”
Ueda’s heart stopped. He knew that voice; it wasn’t Yamapi’s. He slowly turned his head and right behind him, smiling and looking excited to see him was none other than Kamenashi Kazuya, also known as Ueda’s best friend and greatest rival from junior high.
“Oh dear gawd-” Ueda muttered to himself.
Kame threw his arms around the other boy and made a contented sigh. Yamapi looked at the strange boy oddly, curious to know who was hugging his boyfriend and calling him by the special nickname that he had given to Ueda.
“Uh-who are you?” he finally asked.
Ueda sighed, “Yamapi-this is Kamenashi Kazuya. We were classmates in junior high.”
“Just classmates?! We were so much more than that, Tat-chan!” Kame pouted.
“Fine! Kame and I were best friends until-”
“Until you decided to leave me and go to that snobby boarding school-Saint Something-Or-Other,” Kame continued to whine.
Ueda twitched at the sound of Kame’s voice and Yamapi took notice.
“Ah, I’m Yamashita Tomohisa-I’m Tat-chan-er-Ueda-kun’s-friend.”
“Friend? You mean you and him aren’t doing it, Tat-chan?”
Ueda’s eyes grew big and he put his hands forcefully on Kame’s shoulders.
“Don’t say things like that out loud, you pervert! People can hear you!” he scolded the other boy.
Kame laughed, “You always were such a prude, Tat-chan. But I’m surprised that you and he aren’t together-it looks like you’re on a date.”
“Actually-Yamashita-kun and I are-we are on a date. He’s my boyfriend,” Ueda said, which shocked both Kame and Yamapi.
“Really?”
“Really?!” Yamapi asked, enthusiastically.
Ueda nodded his head.
“Wow! I never expected you to date anyone, Tat-chan-not to mention a guy. Wow-that’s interesting.”
“Kame, don’t.”
“Don’t what?” Kame asked, feigning innocence.
“Don’t go telling our classmates that I’m gay or anything because I know you will and I don’t want a bunch of those losers asking me questions about things they shouldn’t be asking me about!”
“Oh, Tat-chan-you worry too much. He’s always like this, isn’t he, Yamashita-kun?” Kame smiled at Yamapi, who nervously shrugged his shoulders.
“Don’t say stupid things, Kame!” Ueda growled.
Kame just laughed, ignoring his friend’s demand.
“So, Yamashita-kun-”
“Yes?”
“How’d a guy like you end up with a mess like Tat-chan? Did he bribe you? Did he blackmail you? GASP! Are you here against your will?! Blink once if you are!” Kame was acting dramatic as Ueda knew him to be.
Ueda was ready to punch his childhood friend in the face but Yamapi was quick to defend his boyfriend.
“Actually-I confessed to Ueda-kun and then proceeded to ask him out. I’m lucky that he said yes because I would’ve been heartbroken if he rejected me,” Yamapi slowly put his arm around Ueda’s shoulder and Ueda felt goosebumps form on his arms.
“Ehhhhh? Really? You confessed to Tat-chan? That’s hard to believe,” Kame rubbed his chin like he was deep in thought.
“KAME!”
“Oh, relax, Tat-chan! I’m just kidding. I know you’re quite the catch-I’ve seen you naked after all! HAHA!”
“WE USED TO SHOWER IN GYM CLASS TOGETHER!” Ueda screamed to Yamapi, hoping the other didn’t get the wrong idea.
“That’s not the only place we did so,” Kame winked at Ueda and licked his lips.
“KAME!”
Kame laughed and nudged Yamapi who was feeling very uncomfortable but trying not to show it by smiling wholeheartedly. Ueda had never been so embarrassed in his life and he wasn’t sure why but he was really hoping Yamapi did not get the wrong impression of him. Yes, it seemed that Ueda was actually beginning to care what Yamapi thought of him, as strange as it seemed to him.
“So what do you guys want to see?” Kame crossed his arms and looked up at the marquee in order to look for a movie to watch.
“You are not joining us!” Ueda grunted at the other boy.
“Eh?! Tat-chan! Don’t be so mean! Yamashita-kun, tell him not to be so mean!” Kame whined.
Ueda loved Kame, he always had; he was the best friend that he had ever had but sometimes, Kame was a whiny brat who would do almost anything to embarrass him. And the more important the person Ueda was with, the more Kame had to “divulge” about Ueda’s habits.
“Come on, Tat-chan, Yamashita-kun! Let’s go see that movie!” Kame shouted, pointing to the poster of a comedy that had just been released. Dragging both by the arms, he pulled them into the movie theater. Ueda looked over at Yamapi and mouthed an apology to which Yamapi responded with an expression that showed he was perfectly fine and that there was no need for an apology.
Ueda was not expecting such an event to take place on his first date with Yamapi. For some reason, Ueda thought how this would have happened, had Ryo been the one he was on the date with. The thought became too unbearable and Ueda returned his focus to Kame and Yamapi and the present situation.
“Stupid idiot,” Ueda muttered to himself, either referring to Kame or Ryo or possibly himself.
