In Which I Do Not, After All, Review a Movie

Jumper by Steven Gould (who is a bit of a luddite, but an excellent skiffy storyteller) is a fabu book! Get your copy from amazon.com or your local library. Good fun + good thinky stuff = book love for this librarian.

Yup, you should have seen Spiderwick. I did on Friday, and while it had a slow start, in the end a good time was had by all. I went with a friend who's a children's librarian -- we've made something of a hobby out of going to see all the "Harry Potter made us billions, which children's fantasy series can we film now?" movies -- with decidedly mixed results.

That would be frustrating. Going to the movies isn't a big deal for me -- my friend works alternating Fridays and Saturdays, so we go to Friday matinees, usually with supper out afterwards.

Which gives us the advantage of not having to fight crowds, too.

I should say, too, that the most appealing aspect of it for me (I haven't read the books) is the whole "Conan Doyle and the fairies" ambiance. That was just sweet.

And my friend commented, as we were leaving the theater, "Well, that takes care of the sequel business. They filmed all seven(?) books in one movie."

John and I saw Spiderwick and really enjoyed it. Our friend Bill did not...but most of his complaints had to do with how it differed from the book. I haven't read the books, so I didn't have that problem.

I've only read the first book - and then way back when it first came out: my memory of it is very hazy.
