Wednesday books (on Thursday)

What I've read lately:

Fire, by Kristin Cashore. The sequel to Graceling, on the iPad (thank you, Hennepin County Library). I did not like this one anywhere near as well as the first. It has major structural problems, and there's an awful lot of confused (and confusing) but essentially tedious military stuff. I like several of the characters, and ( Read more... )

You know, I think I'd prefer The Unknown Ajax without the italics, on the whole.

I had the same problem with The Reluctant Widown, and it took me a while to notice. What finally clued me in were sentences that just didn't have the right emphasis without the italics. Since then, I've watched out for it right away, so I don't start the book if I catch it. It appears to be a weird interaction between file type conversion and particular ebook programs.

Hey, thanks for reading my book! Glad you finally made it over the hump. You're in good company about the slow start -- my own mother had the same complaint. Heh. Also thanks for the book rec earlier for Midnight Riot -- I have it on hold at the library.

I wasn't sure whether you wanted your LJ handle linked with your real name, so I didn't include it, but I'm glad you saw the comment.

I also recommend Rook, though it's more kitchen sink-ish. I'm always dubious about recommendations from people whose taste I don't know (in this case, someone from my handspinning group), but it came up aces this time.
