That's so awesome and cute that Rb's work is sought after like that!

I understand the frustration of not selling your stuff, or attracting attention at a table. I had a horrible time one year in Chicago when I set up a table at an artists' show. There is such a huge psychological aspect to selling art. First of all, RB is your biggest competitor! Hahahaha. Secondly, your maps are so beautiful when they are framed -- Do you have any in a frame to show potential buyers? If you have a lot of maps, maybe only show a few. Make them seem more rare. I think even at a print show, that might be effective. I think having one or more framed, and selling them framed for more $$ would be a good start.

I think the fact that she's cute helps in selling her work. There was a period of time where I was on my own at the table, as Rb and Lucas had gone to get dinner, and this lady looks at Rb's zines and I was trying to explain to her how it's Rb's work even though she isn't there but I don't think she heard me, because as she was leaving she said "it's quite hard to draw like that." Not if you're five!

First of all, RB is your biggest competitor!
Haha, yes! Joanna actually said that. I pointed out that perhaps she was attracting people to the table so she's more like a double-edged sword.

I didn't know you did an artists' show. Did you do a lot of those? I had no idea there was such a psychology to selling art. I thought it was pretty basic, but ha, I'm so naive!

Lucas had that exact same suggestion about putting my maps in frames! Great minds! I will be seriously considering this for the next fair I do. And I do like your suggestion about not showing all the maps. It'll make the table less cluttered too!

Hahahhaha, "it's quite hard to draw like that."

I only did one show and felt very unmotivated to do any more! It was part of a neighborhood collective of artists that I had started to associate with right before we moved away from Chicago.

Definitely frame a map!

A friend of mine made a facebook page and sells her things that way. Maybe that would help?

As soon as I had any money of my own my mother told me 'remember, you can only spend your money once'. It's a very useful thing to remember, even now I'm in my thirties.

I thought about a Facebook page a long time ago, but I think I'm going to wait until I get a bit more of a following before embarking on that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Your mother is so wise! I do like what she said. I'll have to borrow that, both for myself and Raspberry. I have this bad habit of mentally spending x amount of dollars on multiple things (eg. "$5 covers the book I bought for $5" and then a few days down the line, I'll think something like, "hmm, that $5 also covers this dress.") Yeah, my mind works in amusing ways!

I'm sorry to hear about the disappointment, but I agree with others that it's awesome that Raspberry's work is successful. You could try to sell some of your photos!

I actually did put together a couple of sets of photos to sell, but I've only sold one set and that was at the first print fair I did. Ah well. There's always the Internet! I'm going to take some time to "recalibrate" and figure out what works and what doesn't when it comes to selling at a fair.
