we are similar in too many ways.

i have always done this. with the first boy i 'fell in love' with, i started a jeff box in which i kept everything that reminded me of him. i kept a halls wrapper from a halls he gave me on the bus once. so i really did mean everything. anything material between us is in that little box. i've stopped putting things in it, but i still have it.

i started this with other boys, as well, but i don't keep nothing things anymore.

the thing is, though, that the halls wrapper reminds me of something that i have forgotten about completely until you just reminded me. i don't remember much but that we laughed a lot and ate cucumbers. but it's nicer to hold on to memories than throw them away.

but i know what Lucas means about the christmas cards. i keep them (in their envelopes), but i can't even remember the last time someone has sent something other than 'merry christmas, love' in them. and cards used to be my favourite things about presents...

I think in that sense (what you said), sending Christmas cards is more real. But then, when it fades into doing it for the sake of doing it, when it becomes mass-produced, then it just seems to fall into the consumerist trap that is Christmas.

I wonder sometimes if it's a girl-thing to want to hold onto memories. Obviously, it is socially, but I wonder if there's something more to it.

I often wonder what'll become of these physical memories after our existence (and likewise, what will become of our memories themselves). I sometimes envision that down the line, one of my descendants will be holding one of silliest things I've saved and telling the story attached to it. Of course, this is overly fairy-tale, too much like a sappy movie even.

That's great, that cards are your favorite things about presents. I'm all about the cards too. If someone who doesn't know me very well feels obligated to get me a gift, I'd much rather they got me a card and wrote something beyond superficials in it.

I think these days, holding onto idealism (ironically) keeps you down-to-earth. It's almost old-fashioned, in a way. I'm not sure if that makes sense?

I had no idea the US had 50 cent pieces! Apparently, once upon a time, Canada had them too.
