Left of the Middle, Smidge from the Right

Things are becoming a bit more routine now with the job. The commute isn't as bad as I thought it would be, and the lunch break is pretty healthy. Despite it being a 7:00am-5:00pm job, I still get plenty of time to do important online tasks, such as bidding on e-Bay, reading spam and IM'ing Santa Claus. The guy whom I've replaced leaves tomorrow ( Read more... )

However, nothing says accessorizing like Walmart.

Stop supporting slave wages! Anything you can find at Wal-mart, you can find at elsewhere. It only takes a little effort. Wal-mart is destroying our economy and helping to make the middle class an extinct economic group.

Did you know that Wal-mart controls 10% of all music sales? Do you realize how much political power they hold over the record industry? By 2007 they well control 30% of all grocery sales. 30%!!!

Wal-mart is a horrible horrible horrible company. They get millions of dollars in tax breaks for hiring people on public assistance (i.e. welfare) but then don't pay them enough in wages for them to get off of public assistance. So in other words, they get millions of dollars in tax breaks for KEEPING their employees on wel-fare!!!

I know it's difficult to NOT shop at wal-mart, they do have lower prices, and everything is right there, but in the long run, everytime you shop there, you are slowly hurting your own wallet.

I had to re-write this entry several times and edit out all the curse words because I really hate it when people speak up on topics they know absolutely nothing about. So I will try to get my point across calmly and without being insulting:

People could work more hours, ask for a promotion, or find another job.I am very happy if you have or had a job in which all you had to do was ask for more hours or a promotion when you needed more money. Unfortunately, this does not reflect the reality of the average american, particularly those in the lower socio-economic income ranges ( ... )

Nickle and Dimed is a good read. Read that for a feminist philosophy class. I've been reading some excerpts from Domhoff's book, but I think I'll pick one up for some leisurely reading. My biggest concern with Walmart is its use of OCW's- overseas contract workers. Not necessarily outsourced, these workers, many from the Philippines, work in the U.S./Walmart under shady work permits yet are not provided adequate protections and benefits provided for workers from neighboring Mexico. Given that Walmart will probably continue to capitalize on this job market (where they make a profit on the backs of the immigrants whilst marginalizing the working poor), it's never a losing situation for them ( ... )
