Deeply sad news this morning. Jack Layton, leader of the NDP, well-deserved leader of the Official Opposition, most honest politician you're going to meet, passed away in the early hours of the morning today

It absolutely does, and I'm sort of amazed that he took the time to write it. Canada's lost a good man, but it's good to see that people of all political stripes understand that and are genuinely sad in the face of it.
Isn't it? They're fitting final words, and I hope people use them to go forward and do good things. It's been especially impressive to see so many people, all across the political spectrum, be so upset about his passing. I watched hardened journalists tear up while talking about him yesterday, and plenty of people have been talking about how everyone called him by his first name, which is strange when you're talking about politicians, just because he was that sort of man. Quebecers called him "Le Bon Jack," "The Good Jack." ^_^
I was in Surrey this weekend visiting friends, so we were talking about this yesterday morning over breakfast... what a wonderful man, and what a wonderful letter--I can see how missed he will be.
*sigh* I do wish more politicians were like this.
*hugs* I was thinking about you this weekend, being in your homeland and all... how are you, dear?
Surrey, BC? Oh, how nice! I hope you had a good time.
It's been quite eye-opening to see how many people, of all political stripes, respected Jack, and quite heartening too. The Prime Minister, in a rare moment of feeling, has granted Layton a State funeral, which is something that only goes to Governor Generals (the Queen's representative in Canada) and PMs, so this will be a first for the Leader of the Opposition.
It's so sad that politicians like Layton are so rare. -_-
*hugs tight* Oh, that's nice to hear. Thanks, Kris. I'm loving being home, but dreading going back. If I could do my dissertation without going back there, I would. As much as I want to like it, I feel like it's a continual exercise in keeping me off-balance and making me as miserable as possible. Yay. *sigh* I can't wait to be done and move home again.
