This is fantastic; what an imaginary! Your characterization is spot-on and I love it. Yay; you did it again... thank you for posting!

*G* Thank you so much! I can't tell you how many times I started writing different versions of this one in my head until arriving here. I'm so relieved it worked, and thank you for saying so! ^_^

ah yes... Regiment is top three for me of all the Sharpe's. this is a nice little flashback to wake up to.

Vaughn and his bog-trotter *snort* whether he 'sees' it or not, the Lieutenant Colonel is something like privy to classified intel there. and it makes him rather nervous (and his moustache droop!).

what i liked especially was the timing...all that attention to detail, every little hair; about the time we think he's going to go on and write a book about it, SNIP! thank you very much...!

Oh, I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Hee. There's so much about "Vaughn" and "O'Keefe" that unsettles Girdwood, and that's never good for one's mustachios. ^_~

I'm so pleased the timing worked so well for you, and thank you for saying so! *G*

Ooh, I loved that. Perfect internal monologue; the voice was exquisitely rendered, ruthless and observant and vain. You have a brilliant knack for these small, revealing moments. So well done, thank you!

You capture Girdwood so perfectly and I love this line about Sharpe and Harper :

All but that Vaughn fellow and his bog-trotter, striding in perfect time, never out of step with each other, as if they'd been born with their boots on, rather than dredged up from the slurry along with the rest of the rabble.

Then at the end, as we are chuckling at his ridiculous vanity the last lines are chilling, foretelling deadly peril for our lads :

...it was a Lieutenant Colonel's duty to make sure not a hair was out of place.

Not one hair. And if single strands resisted, it would be simple work to snip them clean off.

Brilliantly done!

Oh, I'm so glad you liked this! ^_^ And I'm really pleased to hear that the switch between frivolousness/vanity and ruthlessness/peril at the end worked! Thanks for your kind feedback, madame!

How very Girdwood-like. And even he can sound sinister...

Thank you so much! ^_^ I was hoping that the sinister tone would come through.
