Post-Holiday Exchange Feedback Challenge--

Dec 27, 2009 14:58

Ok, so. As I'm sure some of us are aware, after the rush, rush, rush up to the holiday season, after putting in lots of hours angsting/plotting/writing/rewriting/editing/betaing stories for exchanges, there's always a sad sort of dip right afterward, as the hours tick by and the feedback remains thin on the ground.

Of course, plenty of this lack is due to perfectly reasonable issues... )

I've already left 5x as many comments as I've received. :(

The AO3 interface is making me neurotic -- it clearly displays hits, so I can see exactly how many people read my story but didn't consider it worth commenting on. I'm trying really hard not to give in to the impulse to whine but it's tough.

It is sorta nailbiting, isn't it? I do recall that the archive was making it really hard to comment to begin with, so a lot of those hits might have been people who were blocked from commenting for a while. Also, I don't think it's set up to distinguish hits and IP addies, so if someone revisits time and again, it registers as a new hit. And of course most readers are lurkers at the best of times, so it's no comment on the quality of your story. -_-

I suspect for most of us who are used to LJ and the mailing lists before that, since you could never see the hits to each story, it was easier to assume the ratio of feedback to readers was more even. (As I recall, website hits for stories are often a ratio of 100 hits per comment, which just plain sucks.) *hugs*

Yeah, I'm reminding myself of all those things -- plus I wrote in a reeallly tiny fandom, so the audience is simply smaller by nature.

At least my recipient liked it!

That's a wonderful idea! I love how you're always so proactive about things. Since I don't write fics, I'll extend it towards general commenting (which, I haven't been doing much, 'cause I'm a lurking lurky thing =P), and also try to write better comments than just, OMG HEARTS!!

I like that idea. Go for it!

And the reason I don't comment is that I no longer read fic. When I do, I comment. I feel obliged (like thank you cards, maybe?) tho maybe sometimes I am so busy that my thanks are brief.

Heh, well I've already started drawing conclusions based on the lack of feedback for certain fics (as in 'hi, pls remember this next year so you don't sign up for one too many fic exchange, hee!) - but most of it nothing I wasn't expecting, really. I think part of it's because I did some pinch hits for one relatively small challenge (about 40 participants) and of course no one seems to read anything but their own story (yet?). Anyway, I do always comment when I read and read based on recs (so far only the yuletide readers are providing those) so I have left a considerable amount of comments already after reading some wonderful stories, and I'm trying my hardest not to mope, too. It's something, I guess.

I just popped in to say that although I am barely on LJ anymore, I really would like to thank you for the virtual Gift of a Christmas cookie, and although I miss the V/S fandom dearly, I might not be popping back in any time soon due to real life stuff.

However, there are a handful of fantastic authors/people I remember from there, and you're definitely one of them :)

Hope you had a fantastic Christmas, and a rocking New Year!
