other than what was sure to be dubious bathing standards, that sounds very much like the first ep of sharpe, as richard is set in place as ranking office of the rats. one tends to forget about that fight, too: But he was as a blunt club to Richard's keen blade, and bludgeoning only went so far... Maybe Harper was the bigger rat, but Richard's teeth were sharper, his claws longer. thanks for the reminder, and the sharper in general.

...and maybe Harper is also making sure his officer stays the rat with the hold of a terrier that will smell out their enemies and bite them first. A fine evocation of the grim savagery of men surrounded by violence and class...and I agree, it reads like an opening statement...*looks hopeful*
