I went back to re-read Charles Clarke's resignation statement, when he lost the Home Office in the reshuffle and chose to leave the Cabinet rather than being some other post.

It intrigues me, anyway.

When I start getting particularly conspiracy theory loon-ish, it makes me wonder if that's *why* he turned down staying in the Cabinet. He couldn't easily attack Gordon from a minor Cabinet (or just outside the Cabinet) post, so he thought "Shove this for game of soldiers" and decided to go to the backbenches to stamp on his face.
