has there been any point in recent history where a significant figure warning against infighting and splits in public has done anything other than given the media an excuse

Not that I can recall. More importantly, what do voters respond best to, open and honest debate within the party about the future or futile attempts to paper over cracks and appear united on all things?

I always respond best to a discussion on the issues. NuLab's attempts to keep a united front at all costs are doomed to failure, and create this false perception of splits. Blairites/Brownites? Personality and presentational clash, not policy division really, Brown is as much NuLab as Blair.

The Cameron/Davis election, and the Campbell/Huhne/Hughes election did good for the parties, people respond well when they see people are actually thinking about stuff.

Media likes to talk of splits, but the parties encourage it by a pretence of unity. An acknowledgement that debate is good and healthy would stop this problem. Well, lessen it, anyway.

*sobs quietly*

I haven't seen any decent memes in ages. I assume that everyone on my friends list is putting them on filters I'm not on.
