Was it Berg's music or the performance that drove people away? Surely people going to an Alban Berg opera would have some idea of what to expect musically.
The last live opera performance I went to (Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito in Boston) had such a ridiculous setting that I had to just close my eyes. The music was nice, though the constant laughter, inappropriate to the story or words, kept me sure I was making the right choice in enjoying it audio-only. I left after the first act.
Based on the comments that I overheard, I would guess that Berg's music drove most people away.
I thought the setting appropriate and performances competent. I suspect that many attendees went to see the Metropolitan Opera, as opposed to listen to Berg's music.
