Sprint had announced that the update to Android 2.2 for the HTC EVO 4G would be available August 3rd, so naturally every few hours yesterday I would hit the update button on my phone.  Finally at about 8:30 last night, I got the "an update is available" message, and about 20 minutes later, I had Froyo on the EVO.  Unlike previous phones where an ( Read more... )

I have a Droid, which is also starting a 2.2 rollout. It turns out you can download the official signed update.zip from google and manually install it without waiting for the OTA, so I'm now running 2.2. Verizon also crippled tethering, but you don't even have to hack your phone to get free tethering. If you can be happy with using the USB cable, download EasyTether or PDANet. No root required, but the "full" versions do cost a a few bucks if you want to access https websites.

Also, the Verizon/Droid version doesn't seem to come with Flash, and the Adobe Website won't let you directly download it for the Droid. No problem, though. I found the Beta 3 installer and was able to get it going as well.

I'm pretty pleased so far.

Unfortunately the primary machine I wanted to tether with is my Ubuntu netbook. PDANet requires a lot of hacking to make it work, but EasyTether does claim to work with Ubuntu (it's also cheaper for the pay version). It took some effort (the instructions are not easy to find), but I finally figured out how to write a script to automate the process.

I still can't plug it into my Cradlepoint router like I could my old Mogul phone.

I'm happy with my iPhone, but I've been eyeing off different Android tablets, so I am very interested to hear your impressions of the new Android.
