Data safe

One thing that I worry about is data security.  I have so many files, some of which date back over 15 years, that I don't know what I'd do if I lost them.  I have almost every e-mail that I've sent or received since 1997.  I have letters sent by friends whom I haven't seen in ages, I have pictures and video of family members who've passed away.  I ( Read more... )

That fire safe looks neat. Though I wonder about cooling. If it's insulated enough against fire, is there a concern about the hard drive overheating during operation? That's probably a non-issue though.

I use primarily DVDs and CDs for backups, but it's nowhere near a one-touch backup. I keep a text file listing the date of the last backup of each individual directory. Most directories don't change very fast, so I end up burning the documents folder most frequently. Perhaps I backup a little less often since getting the RAID-1. I also try to store the optical discs off-site.

I thought about getting a small fire safe for the optical discs, but wonder if it's safe enough. The temperature inside those things can still get to 200F in a fire, and I wonder if that affects the dyes.

Here's a story that recently appeared in The Online Photographer blog, about the coming extended capacity SD flash memory. It might be of some use for you.
