When I started growing my cantaloupes and realized I had waaaay too many my dad was like "maybe you can sell some and make some extra money!!!" and for that one moment all the fun that had gone into growing my cantaloupes that far was sucked out. I don't want to grow things for money! I want gardening to be something I do for fun, for me, just to

That sounds like it's coming along! Maybe when people go missing, they're all "Were we wrong about Ichabod and Professor Peaches?" and there's some mystery about that, and possibly even someone being wrongfully blamed, before it's revealed they're actually being stolen by evil jellyfish?

I think I'm going to leave the jellyfish as a referential thing, they belong too much to Ichabod and Lupe's story. It is other aliens, though. They're taking humans/things to study on their ship. (Professor Peaches doesn't approve, because removing sentient life from its habitat against its will is a no-no. Non-sentient life is one thing, as long as you don't mess up the ecosystem, but sentient life is entirely different.)
I know Shrimp is gonna get really excited when he sees Professor Peaches (who he thinks is a specimen). He's like "I read about these! They found them a few years ago and they only live on this one island! How did you get one?" and then catches himself and is like "Uh, I mean. It's a'ight."
Meanwhile Stas is just "Professor Peaches???" while Lupe just looks embarrassed.

Kidnapping aliens makes sense! Also, for the tenor of the story you're going for "Everyone's in the sample tank, somewhat worried, but basically okay" is much better than "Everyone's dinner!"
Awesome!

Well I mean, I'd rather not traumatize a couple of thirteen year old boys by making them the only thing standing between people and getting eaten by aliens. So the aliens are reasonable scientists who just engage in some questionable ethics. (And the thing is, there probably are humans willing to be subjects if they're well-treated. There's seven billion people on the planet, I'm sure they could find some who saw 'going off to be studied by alien scientists in space' as a pretty appealing choice. Which Stasney is absolutely going to point out.)
