There are some movies I'm quite content to know the only TV version.. because it somehow 'fits'. It feel like the proverb, 'От добра добра не ищут'.

War and peace is one of those, our version. (Even though I've heard the film was much criticized when it just appeared :-) ).

And Gone with the Wind with Clark Gable and Vivien Lee is the other. (I've tried to watch the mini(?) series that goes afterwards, but that woman :) is no Scarlet!)

As for our classics, every abroad movie I tried to watch was ridiculous, every one its own way. I haven't tried the one you're talking about though. May be I will try...

Also, (may be I have said so before), I love the British movies based on British novels. Not every time, of course, but more often than not. They are just so respectful of the book, and the acting is usually also nice. I don't know if it's just me, but they feel like they are made very lovingly. :)

The version of War and Peace I watched was all filmed in Italy - so no doubt it would indeed look ridiculous to you! However, I am working myself up to actually reading the novel, and wanted a little colourful 'incentive'. Watching a very young version of my favourite Sherlock Holmes actor was very good incentive indeed. ;-)

The musical My Fair Lady is based on a famous play entitled Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (contemporary of Oscar Wilde and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and so it has at least some literary credentials. But although supposedly set in London, it was all filmed in a Warner Brothers studio in the US. Still, the sets do actually quite accurately resemble real London locations. LOL! :-)
