I used to love those Farewell then poems! Very good. My Woolies memories: Those pull-string gas heaters (or maybe even lights!) in New Malden Woolies when I was little. And the little scales for measuring a quarter of Jazz Drops (How I loved Jazz Drops) My father encouraging me to do well at school or "You'll end up in Woolworths!" (A terrible ultimate fate!) RIP Woolies.
Those Farewell then poems are still going strong! I just thought I'd get in with this one before the 'real' E J Thribb pays his own tribute to the passing of the original penny store.
My first shopping memory - being bought plastic summer sandals (red) in the days long before they were called jelly shoes and trendy!
And Woolies in my home town today ... well it was bedlam. I think the stock will all be gone by the weekend, which does the poor staff no favours at all. Big empty hole on our High Street to follow. :-/

Closed a zillion of years ago, have no idea it was british.
I've always thought it was some relative of 'Walmart'.
Rest in Peace
PS. The poem reminded me of Dickens... Blimey!
