Reading a few reviews of the New York production of John Gabriel Borkman, I see that the stage set there is entirely open to the artificial snowy elements:
Ah! Thanks for all the links for pics and reviews! :-) Now that I have read more reviews and seen more photos I suspect that the house walls/roof have been abandoned for at least two reasons:
First, the stage at BAM looks larger than the Abbey, therefore the original scenery pieces might have looked too small in proportion. Secondly, I believe that some audience seating is actually right on the stage - so probably walls would have obscured the view.
Whilst the lack of walls gives a feeling of a larger, bleaker environment overall, it does not give the feeling of self-imposed incarceration in a house.
I shall keep an eye on your tumblr account for up to date pics from now on. :-))
