we know Laurent was ON the field, but did not see Damwen kill Laurent as in one chapter Laurent said 'they kept me back' and something about 'away from the front' where Damianos and Auguste where.
Laurent was seen as a child so he wouldn't of been in an important position and i think Damianos was 19 and Auguste the same as they were both seen as old enough to rule outright so Auguste could be 21 as that is the age that Laurent has to be to take over from the Regent
I didn't find anything showing us Auguste's exact age at the time of the battle, but I always assumed he must have been around Damen's age (19), or maybe a year or two older, since Laurent said something like "prince Damianos was commanding an army since he was 17", so that must be an unexpectedly young age for that. We also know Auguste was the golden one, while Laurent was had silver hair I think. I don't think the mother was mentioned at all and we definitely don't know that they had the same mother.
btw I'd love to read any fic about Laurent and Auguste <3
I think she was mentioned as dead but that is it. Now I think I might have imagined it! I suck hahahah
I'm thinking we are in the ballpark if we assume he was 21 to Laurent's 14. In my mind both Auguste and Damen were about 19 but that is only because Richard III was a general at 19 (and for no other reason that that!).
It is fascinating that the canon is actually hard to pin down - but then Damen doesn't know exactly the age difference or he has never articulated it - probably the latter because he must have had a rough age range for Auguste. Now I come to think about it maybe that is what freece intended - we don't know because Damen doesn't know, he just makes a rough assumption and so must we.
It might be in the chapter (1st of book 2 I think) where Damen checking stores and realises he's looking at the inventory of the dead crown prince. Don't think Jord mentioned it when he was talking about Auguste.
Sorry, I deleted my first comment because I forgot to mention the chapter where this comes up! I knew I'd read Auguste was 25 when he died so I had to search through the whole thing until I found the reference...it's in Chapter 25 Part 1!
Laurent had been fourteen at Marlas. Or . . . Damen moved months around in his head. The battle had been waged in early spring, Laurent reached his maturity in late spring. So, no. Younger. Thirteen, on the cusp of fourteen.
...
And their general wasn't the king, it was the twenty-five year old prince, holding the field.
So there's an 11-12 year age gap between Laurent and Auguste, and Damen is exactly half way between the two Rabatian Princes in age.
Good job! I had the vague impression that Auguste was older than Damen, but couldn't remember the actual reference and I thought it was just my assumption.
I don't think Laurent witnessed his brother's death. He could have lied to Damen about that in order to make him think he didn't recognize him, but I think that it would indeed be very improbable to let a 13 y.o. prince near the front. Moreover, Laurent at first was sure that Damen had somehow cheated (a conviction possibly reinforced by the age gap between Auguste and Damen), he mentioned something about Auguste being killed "with his own sword" and seemed surprised by Damen's comment that he doesn't kill unarmed men.
Yeah I agree, I don't think Laurent saw the moment of Auguste's death. I think he probably was at Marlas - the place rather than the frontline of battle - because he was determined to stick with his brother, but keeping his head down and avoiding fighting or doing anything that might have caused him to be recognised. So I suspect he saw the aftermath of the Auguste/Damen fight but not the fight itself
