John had Face/Off cued up on the DVD player and was just getting the tub of ice cream out from the freezer when the doorbell rang.

He didn't hurry to open it because he hadn't been expecting anyone, but when the door opened to reveal Dave standing on his front step in an immaculately pressed red velvet suit, he almost dropped his ice cream.

"Da-you-I mean-you were s-serious when you said-"

"A Strider is always completely serious, Egbert. Now c'mon, get your ass out of those pajamas and let's go. I'm not made of time over here."

"But I-" John's mind juggled the many questions he had before settling on one: "I don't have a suit. I kinda, uh. Wasn't really planning to. Um."

"Yeah, no shit Egbert, that's why I rented you one. It should fit, I asked your dad."

"You, you asked my-"

"No time, party's about to start and I didn't fly halfway across the country to not take my long-distance internet boyfriend to prom. Now get in the limo ( ... )

I know this is old but,

"This shit's more ironic than your puny goober brain can even begin to fathom. It's the irony of the fucking century. Our children's children will look back on it and shed a single tear, knowing that they will never, ever be this ironic. Now get in the car."

Completely made my day.

The limo was dark. Roomy, but dark. The driver (who John swore was Dave's Bro, but couldn't quite tell through the tinted glass) was playing some sort of crazy techno song that was almost entirely subwoofer, and the seats and doors thrummed to the beat. John sat in the seat behind Dave, awkwardly trying to pull on pants while sitting down and thinking yeah, this is really great and all, but goddamnit Strider couldn't you have given a little advance notice?

In the seat ahead, Dave was waiting, not sure whether it was okay to look back at John or not (hey, they were dating after all, but he was changing and maybe that was a line you didn't cross? He wasn't exactly a fucking expert at this.) He fidgeted, adjusted his tie, and tapped his foot to the beat. He checked his iPhone. He checked his iPhone again ( ... )
