I read this post from miss_s_b about the relative scale of benefit fraud and tax fraud in the UK, and following on from this one from andrewducker in which the very sensible point is made that most people probably get lost when you start talking about amounts measured in tens of millions, let alone billions of pounds, I thought I would provide a handy visual ( Read more... )

Tax avoidance is legal.

If I join the "cycle 2 work scheme" and pay for a bicycle by payroll deduction, then I don't have to pay tax on that money ... perfectly legal, and I've avoided tax.

Yes, the government had better be addressing tax evasion and fraud, since it is a vast amount ... but one billion isn't small change either. It would buy an entire Millenium Dome you know!

Oh, and the difference in scale between 1 and 15 is a little exaggerated in your photos :-) ... it's more like one person vs a rugby team.
