You might like GunxSword, which is like Beebop if Beebop happened only on one planet and was a bit sillier and also mated somehow with Trigun. Also, try Tactics. Kind of a monster-a-day easing into "OMG there are actual bad guys on this show run away". Full of weird little bits of Japanese folklore that you don't find most places, and very pretty with lovely watercolor backgrounds and cute characters.

SHUGO CHARA. Seriously, it's the best magical girl anime since Princess Tutu (although nothing will ever beat it). And it has a smexy CATBOY. What are you waiting for?!

I also recommend Soul Eater (impeccable style and animation, plus fun characters and fights), and Toshokan Sensou (Library War) for the book nerd in all of us.

I recommend Samurai 7 to absolutely everyone. I thought it was brilliant. It'll also be super cool if you're familiar with the old samurai movie, The Seven Samurai.
