Waking up is hard to do...

Jul 23, 2011 19:46

He'd been awake for just over 36 hours now. The SHIELD doctors were telling him to sleep, but every time he laid down to rest, Steve's dreams were filled with ice and falling...and Peggy's voice saying "You're late" over and over. The War was long over, and several others had passed as well, and Steve had no idea what anyone was talking about half ( Read more... )

Steve finds his seat belt and clicks it on, as he grins and gives Coulson a bit of a wave as they take off. By the time, they're zipping through the city, Steve is just laughing, truly relaxed for the first time since he began his missions against Hydra. "Tony, this is great!"

He shook his head, just grinning, "Don't talk to your elders like that, son!" Steve unbuckled himself and stepped out of the car, stretching his frame back out as he looked around. "You know...aside from the styles; it's not that different."

Of course this was the first time he'd been allowed out in the world without any sort of huge government hue and cry. He'd never been able to just look, and take it all in. "I've been legally dead for seventy years, I don't think you can get anymore incognito."

Steve was caught by surprise when Tony pushed him over to the racks of denim trousers. And then he realized he had no idea what size he was really -- if they even used the same sizes again. While Tony refused help, Steve asked someone over to help measure him again, and even recommended a few cuts for him. Then Tony's pushing other clothes at him, and he carries the pile into the dressing room.

After a few minutes of changing, he calls through the door. "Do people really wear denim all the time?"

"If you say so...I don't know if they look good though." Steve walks out of the dressing room, wearing dark, bootcut jeans, the blue t-shirt Tony picked which is a little tight, and the leather, bomber style jacket. "This looks okay, right?" He just wants to be sure before pulling the tags off and giving them to Tony.

"I really want to thank you for this," he said as he followed him back up front, "You really don't have to, but it is nice to have actual clothes again."

Steve just obediently leans down a bit so Tony can easily reach the tags then followed him to the front where he starts to try on pairs of sunglasses, until he found a pair of aviators he thought he liked. "Or I could just bust out with you again. What do you think about these?"

He doesn't mind being out of uniform for a while; he figured he's earned a little time off.

Steve smiled politely at the cashier, then laughed softly -- people used to react to him like that, not that he really misses it. "Why do you like to get under his skin so much?" He liked Fury; he was gruff, but he cared about his people and his duty. "A cheeseburger would be fantastic...I haven't had one since before the war!"

He glanced around, as they came into what had to be the food court; an open eating area with several small restaurants....that's pretty handy actually. "Are malls common now? It's weird to have all these stores inside."

He was growing used to Tony's generosity, and he made a mental note to pay him back once the Army paid him. So, he went ahead and ordered two large burgers, an order of fries and a coke, and a milkshake. The mention of his time at school made him laugh softly, the tips of his ears turning red with embarrassment.

"Yeah that's true, I was an art student; I had planned to be an illustrator until the War broke out."
