What's a rhumbline?

Also, are they called the Scilly Isles because they have no gravitas there?

a rhumbline is a course line between two points that maintains a constant angle relative to north. In other words, on a mercator projection (most any map you're likely to see) it is a straight line. However, on this spheroid upon which we live, it is not the shortest distance between two points, hence the use of the Great Circle course over great distance.
